Service and Route Changes Effective July 01, 2011 and August 08, 2011
In May and June, Athens Transit, a department of the Athens Clarke-County Unified Government, hosted four public hearings and provided a 30-day public comment period to receive comments and citizen input on proposed FY12 Transit Service reductions and revisions. Over 80 citizens attended the public hearings and the department received approximately 40 written or emailed comments.
As a result of those hearings and the comments received, the Transit Department is announcing the following reductions and revisions to the transit system.
Athens Transit will eliminate all evening services operated after 9:45 p.m. nightly, effective July 1, 2011. These reductions in services are necessary due to reductions in the FY 2012 operating budget of the Transit Department.
Several route revisions will also be implemented on August 8, 2011, in conjunction with the regular fall service schedule. These route revisions are designed to improve individual route efficiency and the overall performance of the Transit Department.
These route revisions will eliminate services in some areas and add service to others. The areas that are being eliminated have historically had very low hourly ridership and are not cost effective. The areas that are receiving new transit services have new development and the density necessary to increase individual route productivity.
Route revisions effective August 8, 2011:
1) Route 8 will be removed from the following areas: Cleveland
Avenue; Athens Avenue; Augusta Avenue; Whitehead Road; Roberts Road; Lavender
Road; Amethyst Road; Nantahala Avenue; Nacoochee Avenue; Boulevard (from Pound
Street to Chase Street); and Pound Street. Route 8 will be rerouted along MLK,
Ruth Drive, Ruth Street, Lake Street, Northside Drive, Bridgewater, Northcrest,
and North Ave. A PDF map and timetable are available.
